Can anyone tell me why flattery is confused for a real compliment in SW?

Flattery has nothing to do with kindness. It's kissy kissy sugar coating to be liked and thought highly of by others. It's with an agenda.

@SW-User all speech has an agenda. Nobody speaks without a reason.

So the difference is the sincerity... It's hard to tell when someone is being sincere when it's just words on a screen. You want to see their eyes, their actions, hear their tone and see their body language.

@CheshireCatalyst exactly. I don't agree it all has an agenda, though. An agenda suggests something nefarious in nature, while sincerity and purpose suggest something genuine, i.e., establishing a friendship.

Flattery is pandering, and is usually a predictable or overused
Excessive compliment, also known as brown nosing or boot licking.
It stems from the givers need or self want.

A true compliment is usually more unique and tailored to suit the person it's given to, and comes from appreciation and respect,
and is given with no self need or want.

Some are very suspicious of anyone offering a kind word... hence they are attracted to social media and the Extra layer of safety it provides ... 🤷🏻‍♀️ Ie some folks just can’t take a compliment 😉
