What is the strangest thing your pet ever did?

When I was 15ish I had this cat I named Wooden because I saw him run head first into a telephone pole and I said he was dumb as wood. One day I am outside and I hear the strangest sound. I walk around the house and find that the tree above my picnic table is filled with birds. Wooden is standing atop the table, on his hind legs, singing to the birds. It was the strangest and most alien beautiful song. Idk if he was trying to lure them closer for the kill or just show them his love for them. Maybe both.

I had a cat that hated his tail. He'd lie down and try to sleep, but his tail would start whipping side to side. He'd close his eyes and growl. Eventually he'd open his eyes and put one of his front paws on the end of the tail. Well, that kept the tip of it still, but from the tip to where it attached to his butt, it was still wiggling, trying to escape; so he'd place his other front paw on the middle part. That would work briefly but then the two bits between would be hopping up and down and trying to buck his paws off. Then he'd get really mad and bite it. Well that invariably hurt. So he'd get even madder and attack it, but it would move away. And there he'd go chasing it until he caught it and bit it again. Eventually, he'd give up and come back to bed. The tail would wag, but he'd just pretend he didn't know it was there.

He did that often enough that I was tempted to take him to a psychiatrist. Unfortunately, back in the middle of the 1970s, cat psychiatrists weren't advertising in the Yellow Pages.

He started that behaviour as a kitten. Kept it up until he died at the age of 17. What a weirdo.

He also swallowed a sparrow whole, one time, head first. He couldn't get it all the way in and couldn't puke it up. That was a fast cab ride to the emergency vet and a $1000 surgery. Stupid cat. He was the first cat I ever had that became an indoor cat. Since then, I've never had one that wasn't. I see too many dead cats on the streets of the city.

That cat must have bumped his head hard when he was little, he wasn't all there was he?

@cherokeepatti: he was actually a smart, loving cat who could learn tricks. He always came when we called. He was more like a dog in some ways. He'd sit up and speak, roll over, play dead. He played fetch with a bean bag. And he LOVED water. Couldn't keep him out of the bath or the kids little back yard turtle pool.

I think he just never got the concept that the tail was a part of him.

My mom once had a cat who hated the cat in the mirror. She'd snarl. Turn her back and walk away, but when she walked past the mirror again, there she was again. And the snarling would start up. Apart from that one thing, she was completely fine.

I think the strangest and funniest thing one of our dogs (rat terrier) ever did, was she crawled through a plastic shopping bag. She was SO freaked out by the noise it made that she went tearing through the house, yelping, with the bag handle still around her neck. We had such a time catching her to get it off. She was SO scared, but we were dying laughing. It was hilarious. We comforted her and she was fine, but the house was a shambles.

There was a noise outside one night (early evening), the dog woke up and ran into the kitchen to check her food bowl. Realizing what she had done she came out walked past me, curled back her lips to form a smile and proceeded to look out the window. It was as if she was embarrassed for running into the kitchen and was saying "silly me".

My friend Halina had this lil dog and was sitting for another. During the day when they were at work, they put both dogs in large, side by side kennels in the apartment with food, water, couple toys and lined with newspaper. They come home, house is a mess. Dogs got out somehow. Next day, it happens again, and again. So they set up a camera. Halina's dog was not only smart enough to work his kennel latch free, he let the other dog out too. lol

@DanielChristensen: They are far brighter than people credit them to be.

Sometimes cats make those noises because they want badly to catch the birds. I've had cats that sat on the windowsill looking out and it sounded almost like singing, more like nervous energy and anticipation.
I had a Siamese cat that saw a butterfly and jumped up trying to catch it and ended up doing a somersault, would have loved to have that on film, it was decades ago.
Apparently some wildcats do sort of the same thing. They learn how to imitate the sounds monkeys make to lure them closer when they're hunting. Pretty brilliant.

Wow, I always knew microlions were smarter than most people think.

@AmbivalentFriability: I've heard that as well. Predators have all kinds of wild behaviors.
Smart dog. Tiffany approves. 😎

@tiffanyandasaltshaker: At one point in his life, Wooden got fat. Pretty damn fat. My window had a flower box attached. I would hear him jump into the flower box and then open the screen and he would come in.

One day I hear this crash noise, then silence. Then I hear this sliding, scratching sound like.. ffffft! fffft! ffffft! ffffft! I open the curtain and there is Wooden, his upper arms over the top of the flower box. The sound was his hind legs kicking. Ahahaha. I helped him up and he lost the weight too.

@DanielChristensen: Poor baby?!🐈💓
That is amazing 😲

I haven't seen our pets do strange things like that 😭
DanielChristensen · 46-50, M
What kind of pets do you have? I always had cats. Dogs are wonderful, but not for me. I don't like loud noises. Not fond of all the slobbering and hair either.

Wooden's a cool name!

My step dad started calling him Woody after I left for college. He died when I was away and my stepdad buried him in the yard. He was quite a hunter and fighter. I loved him.
