I Put Out SunFlower Seeds In An Old Bird Feeder During The Snow In February...

A month ago. Haven鈥檛 put out any seeds since the snow melted. And now I notice in the mornings that A single cardinal or a single blue jay will come to the closest tree and stare towards the empty bird feeder. Wasn鈥檛 wanting to attract squirrels to the yard, they eat the bulk of the seeds and spill them on the ground attracting mice. But I hate to see the birds staring at the feeder like they are begging and wanting some seeds to supplement their diet.

I bought some bird feeders which have little trays you can attach underneath which stops a lot of the seed waste. I cannot believe the difference 馃槉

@GLITTER I need something like that. I don鈥檛 like squirrels getting too comfortable because they can be extremely destructive to the house, pulling off the chimney cap and getting down between the sheet metal and chimney and getting stuck inside the house is one thing, they鈥檝e torn up the vents under the eaves and gotten into the walls too. They鈥檝e torn up the wood trim too...not just my home but many of the neighbors..trying to get inside. Then they get into the feeder and eat at least 80 of the seeds, the fallen seeds get eaten by mice or birds...have found piles of bird feathers under the feeder, a cat or hawk must have gotten them while they were eating off of the ground. And I鈥檝e had mice, the little dark brown furry type, come inside my house in the winter, caught 8 of them total one winter. I stopped feeding the birds after that.

@cherokeepatti i get it. We do have lots of mice that our cats bring in (sometimes dead sometimes alive) but we have also attracted owls who also help hoover them up. Our squirrels aren鈥檛 too bad, they seem to nest in the trees and have never really had any trouble with them tearing up the house. The only thing they do destroy is my bird feeders 馃槕 but I get they want to eat too so I don鈥檛 mind feeding them. I find them quite amusing to watch, as do the cats. My female cat chases them round the garden. Perhaps that keeps them in check 馃ぃ
