Have you ever seen blue algae on a lake before?

I hadn't until today, but had heard of a few dogs dying after swimming in water contaminated by it. Here's a pic of it and another of the same lake where it hasn't spread to yet.

Algae blooms form when the water is contaminated. Caused by pollution, e.g., from runoff travelling through farms and parking lots, etc., changing the PH, temperature, oxygen levels, etc., of the water. Clear-cutting around bodies of water will also affect the temperature, further degrading water quality. Looks like there's plenty of shade there, though. I am assuming the water levels are lower than average.

@lovelywarpedlemon yes they are as we've had hardly any rain for over a month now
@Travelbug Yes, that can be a cause, as well.

Cyanobacteria. Not good for man nor beast.
@Picklebobble2 Really?? 😱 what's the cause?
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Vivaci like all Algae it requires heat; moisture and the right 'nutrients' in the lake.
green. Blue. Brown or Red depending on what the life in the water is.

It's just another Algae unless it 'blooms', in which case it starts poisoning the water.

For some reason algae disgust me.
Travelbug · 56-60, F
@SW-User I think there is good and bad algae
Graciebaby · F
Report it. That's not right at all, looks like it's seeping from something.
Travelbug · 56-60, F
@Graciebaby you have misunderstood this post. It's blue algae that has occured in various waterways in the UK in the past few weeks that the environmental agencies are aware of, hence putting up warning signs.

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I hadn't seen that color before, most of the algae here is either green or a rusty brown color
Travelbug · 56-60, F
@cherokeepatti it is a first for me too
nedkelly · 61-69, M
the first photo looks like a spillage of oil
Travelbug · 56-60, F
@nedkelly up close it looks like tins of blue paint have been poured in the water. Hardly saw any dogs there today which is a good thing.
Uncfred · 61-69, M
Should have gotten rid of my blue rinse elsewhere, oops.
