For over two years every raffle ticket I took won a prize. It started with a pub raffle where I won for a dozen beers. I only took tickets when my head sensed I would be lucky.
The most incredible win actually shocked me.
I worked part time for a local newspaper in the distribution bay on a Saturday. After the afternoon edition had been printed there was a two hour gap until the sports edition started rolling off the press. We would go to the local pub for a few beers and a feed during this time.
When we arrived on this particular occasion my friend Worms (his nickname as he was so skinny) said he was going up to buy a raffle ticket. I asked him to buy one for me. There were five draws for each raffle but I was only interested in the first three prizes, they were for sides of lamb. I said to Worms get me number 7, if that has gone then get me 5 and if that has gone get me 12. He said 12 is my number so you will not get that. He bought the tickets and couldn't get my numbers in the raffle although he got his 12 so he bought me number 7 in the next raffle.
In the first raffle 7 was drawn first followed by 5 then 12. I would have won the side of lamb with any of my three choice of numbers. When the next raffle was drawn my ticket was drawn out first and I like Worms won a side of lamb. How is that for luck.
My run of luck with raffles finished when I spent a Saturday afternoon having a few beers with a friend who had just returned from living overseas.
I told him of my numerous wins without a loss. He must have been skeptical as later when a football club arrived to sell there fundraising raffle tickets he insisted I prove my story to him by buying a ticket.
I told him I didn't want to because I hadn't a lucky feeling about winning this raffle. Anyway he insisted. I bought a ticket and consequently won the prize.
Five or more years passed before I was again to take home a raffle prize.
