Can a 12 year old get depressed?

For the past 4 months I have seen a big change in my daughter ! Shes seems to be depressed. Like can 12 year olds actually be depressed ? What signs should I look for ? I am really worried about her !! Should I take her to see a doctor? Counsellor? I'm so stressed about this .. and when I try to talk to her about this . She snaps at me !! :(

anybody can depressed at any age - I had depression (runs in the family) that was made worse by a move to a place where I was not in the in-crowd.

yes
She needs to make some friends.
Anyone can get depressed

Yes, they can. It is an awkward age for girls and even worse if they feel like they don't fit in.

@SweetMae At that age no one feels like they fit in.

Yes. This can also be a symptomatic of a number of things as well (most of them unpleasant).
She's also at an age that (generally) is the beginning of puberty. Different chemistries going on in the brain as well as changes in the body can cause a number of mood variances.

Possible causes could be strife within friendships, bullying, unwanted sexual attention, or she may just be depressed. I can only urge you not to be to hasty to give her drugs to "help her".

Depression and adolescence tend to go hand in hand.

YES THEY CAN. Talk to your kid about this and take her to see a psychiatrist. If you think she "seems to be depressed" for 4 months that's the only 'sign' you need. I believe in you!

Depression can strike anyone at any age, and it is often not just a case of "the blues". It can be caused by neurological issues, physiological issues, or maybe both. The best you can do for her is have her professionally evaluated by psychiatrists and physicians to see if there is a problem, what it may be, and have it treated.

I saw little children in the psychiatric ward for suicidal attempts. So yes. At any age, humans can be exposed to depression.

I think you should talk to them personally and try to solve the issue if it's one that can be solved to alleviate their pain.

If it's more chemical than conditional then you could always try and see what doctors can do for them.

I'm sorry to hear that. I was depressed from time to time at 12 because I was going through a self-identity crisis. Being teased and made fun of in school sure didn't help things.
silkandlace · 46-50, M
@SubstantialKick yes indeed, me too
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
@silkandlace Middle school and high school were not a very fun time for me 🤷🏽‍♂️.

@SubstantialKick 7th grade to 10th for me, so yes, things brightened after 10th grade, that summer, i made strides in my life for me, felt better, held my head up, its difficult for everyone at that age i believe, in some way

Why not? Illness is illness. It shouldn't be underestimated but at the same time handle it carefully. I hope it will pass!
Yes it could be depression or maybe hormones.
Has she got friends etc or is she withdrawing. If so try talking to her but not overly.
Watch her moods & if shes losing interest in her usual things. Id suggest she goes to the Dr.

She's lost interest in hanging out with any friends :( @Cutiepi23
@Ifollowmyownstar Do you think its possible shes being bullied as it rife in schools. My son was badly bullied years ago. It changed him. Hes older now but I think the scars are there.

Yes they can. If you can't get her to talk to you, you need to find someone who can such as a counselor. It would also be good if you talk to this counselor yourself. This is very important and it will save your family much more pain

I think girls are under more pressure these days than they used to be, Somethings worrying her I would say and you do need to find out what it is. Don’t go to a counsellor yet though
Of course. I think I was first diagnosed at 11-13. Especially with social media and kids today I think it’s probably actually more common than we think possible
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
Absolutely they can. Especially if their going through puberty with all those hormones and brain chemistry changes.
Success · 26-30, F
Ask her if she'd like to move and have a new school. That should get her talking.
Ifollowmyownstar · 41-45, F
Already know the answer to that @Success

i have a 12 year old daughter
Ifollowmyownstar · 41-45, F
Any signs of depression? @tiggerandariel13
tiggerandariel13 · 41-45, MVIP
@Ifollowmyownstar no she's usually okay she keeps herself busy

Yes , take her to see a counselor..it can't hurt
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
It is absolutely a good idea to seek a therapist just to give her someone to talk to that is not you. If she is snapping at you then you asking her questions will not go very far. Give her a safe outlet with a therapist and go from there. Depression or not, she clearly is having a struggle.

This seems to cover it:
