Are most parents brutally blunt about their views and children?

It seems like most parents are Soo blunt. Damn. Are parents suppose to be brutally honest? My dad is a brutally honest person. He tells it like it is and isn't afraid to tell you the truth, even if it hurts your feelings really bad. My aunts and uncles are blunt too so we come from a blunt family.
