Parents: If I have children of my own and they ask me to be honest even if it hurts, should I be brutally honest with them?

My mom was a brutally honest women and will tell you the truth, even it it's painful. My dad is too. My brothers and I are brutally honest with each other. I guess we got it from them.
Anyways when I kid gets older like elementary school and middle school, should I be brutally honest with them? I don't wanna sugarcoat life and the hardships of things. I don't want them bitching at me for not telling them the truth.
Honest but not brutal is how I was with my kids. No sugar coating, but tactful at times.

as long as you love them with all your heart, and they know it, yes... be honest, and expect the same in return.

Give them the information as soon as they are mature enough. I.e I never censored what my kids listen to or watch. But if I heard the word fuck in a song they where listening too then we discusss why it’s in that song and what’s it meaning is.

Carlo b saying fuck you is A lot different than rage against the machine saying fuck you

Sure if you want to traumatise a child who doesn't have the life skills yet to deal with it...why not?

@EmotionalMotherlessWoman1988 Being 'brutally honest'?

Two scenarios of the same thing. A three year old is the child.

1) "Mummy, why won't (insert pet's name) wake up?"
"Sweetheart, I'm sorry darling, but he/she's sleeping and has gone to doggy/bunny/hamster heaven" Scoops up child who sobs as three year old's do.

2) "Mummy, why won't (insert pet's name) wake up?"

"It's dead, deal with it okay? Now go outside I'm busy."
