Do you think kids should get to pick whether or not they go to school any given day?

I'm talking regular school days, not special events, field trips etc...

My 4 year old niece didn't go to school the other day because "she didn't want to go".🙄

I think my sibling is establishing my nieces adult behavior. When she's a working adult (I know, years and years later), she's gonna think it's okay to not goto work because she doesn't feel like it.

I never missed school as a kid. I went every day. My mom didn't care how I felt. She wanted me to get my education. And I'm GLAD👍🏾

No. School is more than just an education (and place to meet with friends).
It is a preparatory action, teaching kids what it is to have to get up and go to a place they don't want to.
They learn that the world doesn't revolve around them, so if they don't get their ass out the door, they miss the bus.

School... is "Work, Jr."

@black4white I have three awesome children, yes. Thank you.

@black4white They have to start learning at some point. Younger the better.

Shes 4 and its no big deal....you are looking FAR FAR FAR deep into the situation...NOW wait til she gets in middle school or high school and see if they continue with that behavior then you have something to worry about but for now... she just got some good mom or dad time :-)
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@black4white yes, but my sibling does the same thing with the 13 year old...The one who makes 60's and Sibling says " well it's almost passing". The same 13 year old who almost got held back last year...but yeah you're right, no reason to be concerned. These aren't MY kids!😅

@iamnikki I am going to leave this alone after this ... at 13 yes their is an issue and the parents need to address and start being parents. There is a time to draw the line with school and expectations i get it. At 4 my expectation are for you to have fun, love life, and be 4. Hell stay 4 as long as you can dont rush to grow up and NO WORRIES about anything except...eat sleep play..rinse and repeat. :-)

My message to a teenage is completely different and much more on line with reality of what life is REALLY about.

good luck to the nieces and nephews

@black4white And thank you. I do agree, all except for the school part🙂. Gotta go to school..but thanks for being respectful🤝

Why are you posting so much about you niece of 4 years old? Is that the same one you said smells because she didn't shower for 16 hrs? Leave the kid alone to be a kid. You seem so controlling to me.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Cutiepi23 nope. That one was a 13 year old.
And I'm not being 'controlling'. They are in my care right now. Their mom is in the HOSPITAL😕
@iamnikki I hope their mum gets well soon.

@iamnikki I hope their mother is okay...

My three children went and go to school unless they were/are ill. They have always liked school. They look forward to school each day and don't want to miss. Also - when they were ill, I have kept them home partly so as not to infect the rest of the class. By the way, my oldest is an honor student in advanced placement classes, and my younger two are in a talented and gifted program.

@iamnikki Eidetic memory.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Byron8by7 ooh nice!. I knew of this but didn't know it had a name (had to google it) I'd like to talk to you about that. IF you don't mind.
Byron8by7 · M
@iamnikki Certainly, by PM, if possible. I have a lot to say about it and this thread.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Definitely not but if a child shows a strong aversion to going to school for a longer period of time, parents should inquire why.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@CrazyMusicLover of course, might be a deeper issue at hand like bullying or not understanding subject material...

No, I agree with you! Of course, it’s like those parents who take their kids out of school for family vacations. Sorry, but I do not allow makeup work for vacations. #beingateacher
MrsKatherineArch · 41-45, F
@iamnikki Our school policy is that there is more than plenty of vacation time already built into the school calendar.

For any pre planned absences, homework MUST be turned in BEFORE, or it will not be accepted for credit.

We have had that policy for the last five years, and it has cut down on the nonsense. There was initially some grumbling (from parents, mostly), but those parents chose to send their kids to our school for what we offer. If those parents don’t like our rules, they are free to withdraw their students.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@MrsKatherineArch I love it. Those same rules applied when I was in school. didn't matter that I was in band and would miss class, you get the work done or you get a zero.
MrsKatherineArch · 41-45, F
@iamnikki School activities are an important part of the entire learning experience. I am sure that you learned how to manage your time in order to do the fun activities too. Well done to you, AND your parents!

A little latitude seems ok. Some kids need a mental health day like adults. If it’s often it maybe a warning of something wrong.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@AnneHoney well sure, but around here, kids are out of school all the time. "teacher prep days" and "stock show day". Seriously?😁
AnneHoney · 36-40, F
Does she take many days off that aren’t scheduled? Do all of them stay home or just individually

My brother does that too bc my mum enables that behaviour, however God forbid if I ever did that in school
