I Need to Vent

Had such a bad experience today.

So I'm currently studying like, theater, music, the likes, and our class went to see Kyli谩n: Black & White in the Oslo Opera House. It's like, modern, contemporary ballet. Amazing stuff, really. So the performance is made out of 6 different choreographies, and all was great until we came to the one called Sarabande.

So, Sarabande is really cool. Thing is, it involves a lot of screams and shrieks that sound hellish when echoing through an auditorium, and one of my classmates is prone to panic attacks.

So 1 minute in or so, as the hellish screaming pierced through the auditorium, I had to deal with my classmate struggling to keep a panic attack at bay and slowly failing with each reverberating scream. I tried to calm her down, and it seemed like it was working a little, until two people who sat close-by shushed us. Right back to misery town.

So I was torn between being "that douche who ignores a person having a panic attack" or "that douche who whispers to the person next to them during an expensive ballet performance".

Either way I feel so lousy right now.

Edit: Here's a clip I found of Sarabande. Imagine this, but ten times louder and impossible to block out.

Vulcan neck pinch those shushing you.

@GeniUs Ugh the petty side of me wish I could. They probably didn't know the circumstances, and whispering or talking with people during a performance like that is generally frowned upon, so I don't really blame them.

I must admit, though, I really wanted to search them out, explain the circumstances, and make them apologize to her after the performance was done. I think she's going to be upset about this for a long time.

It's a 'no-win' situation this one. Except that you are a great friend to the person needing comfort.

@NorthernRoses 2 weeks later now...how is she doing? I will likely PM you to follow-up.

That's a tough place to be. Hope she was okay

@NerdyNudist I don't think she's okay right now, but she will be eventually. The whole ordeal must have been so humiliating for her.
NerdyNudistM
@NorthernRoses Most likely but hopefully you can reassure her it's okay to not be okay, if that makes sense

Wow, I can only imagine that being so nerve wracking. You did the best you could while threading the needle. I feel confident your friend also appreciated the effort.
