So, I saw Megadeth live in concert last night...

Not gonna lie...had I known just how mediocre Mustaine was going to be, I probably would have just stayed at home and tended to the cold I caught shortly before the event (which may or may not have impacted my perception of the experience, but it certainly didn't seem like it was just the fact that my sinuses were clogged and my head felt shitty).

The musicianship was wonderful, there was no doubt about that - the drummer was fantastic and all the guitar playing was on point. But that's really the best thing I can say about it.

Unfortunately, time has not been kind to Dave Mustaine's vocals (and this was the exact problem I had with "Dystopia", the most recently released Megadeth album). Very disappointed with the performance he gave as far as his singing. I'm not even saying his early days as the band's vocalist were anything to write home about. His voice, I believe, was at its highest quality from 2000 - 2012. After that, he went downhill majorly.

My other big gripe was the detuned guitars. I'm sorry, but songs like "Sweating Bullets", "Countdown to Extinction" and "Trust" do NOT sound the same when played in D tuning, which is what the guitars were in for a majority of the show (and likely to accommodate Dave's deteriorated voice).

Out of the Big 4 of thrash metal, their's has certainly been the most disappointing live show in my experience. With them, Slayer and Anthrax scratched off the list, I still need to see Metallica in concert, but I'm hoping they will be much better (as I honestly thought Hetfield sounded better on their newest record than he had in years).

That's a shame...I've seen Megadeth several times and they always put on an amazing show. You're right about it never being about Dave's vocals....calling them subpar is being generous but the musical talent and energy have always been top notch.

Yet I suppose as these guys start finding themselves into their 50's and 60's that they are losing the edge a bit. Except for Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden...probably in his 90's he'll be putting the younger metal bands to shame as far as stage presence.

Haven't seen Megadeth in forever, but you're right, Mustaine's voice was never great. I can't imagine time has done him any favors. Hetfield's voice is nothing like it once was either, but it's impossible to maintain with that singing style.

@SW-User I'm in the minority that finds James' voice has held up very well and still sounds very good now, all things considered.
Who were they playing with? I thought their tour started today in Toronto.

@coolboy86 Neither are Slayer and they don't detune their fucking guitars for their live shows! Also, while Metallica detunes, they only go to Half-Step Down (E Flat), so their live performances of their songs still contain a lot of the life and energy that they do on their records.

Hell yeah, they do! Saw them and Anthrax back in 2012 at Darien Lake...best concert of my life so far!
