I don't mind romance in movies... but I'm with you when the only reason for a character to exist is to be the reluctant romantic love interest that suddenly realizes how perfect hooking up with that person they didn't like earlier would be just because the end credits are about to roll.

Personally okay with romance in films. "Unnecessary" romance, though, I can agree on. I'm not that familiar with romance/romantic films but that's an entire genre of its own.
