Why did darth maul die so soon

The coolest sith besides Vader took a dirt nap in the same movie he appeared in. We didn't get enough time to enjoy him. I know they brought him back in the cartoons but that doesn't count. Something I always found ironic was, in episode 3 obi wan told anakin not to do anything because he had the high ground, anakin lost his legs and a lot of his humanity after that. But darth Maul had the high ground against obi wan in episode 1. Ah but movie logic
