Is it OK to disagree with the film age rating system?

I was encouraged by my parents to watch a lot of films with adult themes and content. By the age of 14 I was allowed to watch some films with an 18 year rate on it. And at the age of twelve I was allowed to watch films with an 15 year rating on it.
