I'm listening to the radio broadcast of the War of the Worlds

and I think I can understand why people thought it was really happening.

It sounds very similar to a regular broadcast.

Well it was just the rough equivalent of a provided text for the week, but it was all about writing convincing dialogue and the like. That bit where the presenter kept asking the farmer to come closer to the microphone was a pretty great example for that.
