What movies shaped you?

The original King Kong absolutely fascinated me and was the first movie that caught my attention as a child. I’m still fascinated by the film and the artistry that went into it.

When I was a kid, my parents used to let me stay up late on weekends and watch the old horror movies that would come on after the local news. “Scream and Scream Again” is the first one of those I remember, because when that guy throws of the sheet to reveal his legs had been amputated, it freaked me out. At the same time, it lit the fuse on my love of horror films.

“The Beast Must Die” is another one of those late night horror movies that left an impression and started me down the path with Hammer and Amicus films.

My parents took me to see The Amityville Horror at the drive in when I was 8. I was terrified for weeks, but it also reinforced the connection I still have with horror movies and drive in theaters.

The movie that sealed my fate as a horror movie fanatic was Romero’s “Dawn of the Dead”. I rented it on VHS when I was a kid, and I rewound it and rewatched it 4 consecutive times that first night. Then, I ordered my own copy using weeks of paper route money, because this was back when it was $80 to buy a videotape. I wore that copy out eventually. I’ve written college research papers about the social messages conveyed in this movie about consumerism. I wrote a research paper about the movie for a visual arts elective course. I ended up meeting Ken Foree and having a fairly lengthy conversation with him about this movie at a party a few years ago, and he talked about the significance Romero saw in having black men as heroes in his films, which was another aspect of the film that left an impression on me as a kid. This movie meant so much to me as a kid that Ken Foree was like my John Wayne. This is easily the most personally impactful movie to my life, because it helped shaped my views on consumerism and race at a young age.

I find it weird that someone actually loves Rock N Rule...
