Yeah, he did human experiments with babies, tortured random people he abducted and never had a compelling backstory to explain his sociopathic behavior. Most characters in naruto are neither good or bad, but Orochimaru is pretty clear cut

Well, he was experimenting on children and sending shinobis to die in the name of science.
