I just always thought humans can't connect with things that don't look human. It has something to do with psychology and the brain but I don't remember and too lazy to look it up lol.

Well but that would be a narrative reason, right? I'm wondering if there's an in fiction reason. Because if it turned out that most aliens were just humans with a nose ridge and a different culture, i would have to believe in a god lol

I don't think there ever was an in fiction reason. I think it's all in budget reasons.
