The books are so different and written for a "different audience" so... Both amazing imho.
Tolkien was surely one of the best writer of 20th century.
What about the movies? The LOTR trilogy is one of the best movie series ever, a milestone for the whole fantastic cinema and maybe even more.
The Hobbit series is just a bit more than crap, thanks to DelToro and similar idiots...

The Lord of the Rings was, really, just too hard to digest - that little Hobbit , though, fried up lovely. A little lettuce and ketchup...hmmmm....yes please! Tolkien was a wonderful cook - not a lot of people know that!

LotR is a book for adults. The Hobbit is a book for kids (or specifically, JRRT's son, really). Each has its strengths.
Lord of the rings. By far. I think the saving grace of the hobbit films was Smaug.
