Should the U.S. be leaving Syria right now?

Yeah, my answer would be different. If I were Trump, I would've convinced the UN to place a peacekeeping force in Syrian Kurdistan as a deterrant to Turkey and [i]then[/i] peaced the fuck out. I would've let Assad eat ISIS -- as he always was going to do -- and basically just allowed the war zone to cool like a burrito. Failing that, I would've brokered a deal between Assad, Kurdistan, and the UN, wherein Assad would be allowed to protect his own border from Turkish aggression and the Turks wouldn't enter.

Let me throw the question back: Did you not know that general Mattis designed because of the initial open decision to withdraw troups? Was he an anti-trump person? How many other people warned against it? I am not an expert, do you think Mattis was? What happened after Trump assured Turkey we were leaving?

it’s not about your army buddies.
those on active duty have a specific job to do. they signed up for the work.they are paid to take orders and not do in depth research and reporting, unless that is their job in the military.

@SW-User I don't care about Russia. If it wants to spend its treasure keeping the middle easterners from killing each other then good on them. They already lost that battle.

@Darksideinthenight1 I agree with you that we shouldn't be in Syria, but it's important to keep in mind that troops were only removed from Syrian Kurdistan -- likely about 100 out of 2,000 -- a region known specifically for its threat of Kurdish incursion and potential human rights abuses. I'm not saying you're wrong to support that on that basis, but it's a bit of context often missed in the news media.

Moving 38 troops out of harms way isn't really pulling the troops from Syria. However I am old enough to remember the end of the Vietnam war. Yes there were a lot of South Vietnamese that were put at risk. Some of them are my friends. When it is time to leave a war it is time to leave.

My personal opinion the United States should pull out of every foreign country and let these countries handle there own problems we have enough issues of our own without trying to police the entire damn planet of these other countries want to kill each other so be it

@ExperienceDLT Abandoning the world stage wont make it easier to solve our problems, it will exacerbate them. I don’t think you understand just how much we benefit from being the biggest gorilla in the jungle. We didn’t become the global guarantor of world order just for shits and giggles, or out of some nonexistent sense of altruism. Helping other people for nothing is utterly absent from American DNA.

Yes. We aren’t suppose to be there in the first place. Regarding the Kurds and the Turks, If Trump had exited out the right way, the Turks would not be attacking the kurds right now.

@jveryoral Those troops that Trump ordered to leave Syria will remain in the middle east to prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State threat. They aren’t making it home.

@jveryoral That was just the immediate scramble. Esper gave a briefing when all of this started - Trump ordered a full withdrawal from Syria except for a small garrison in al-Tanf.
