Why was there a war in Vietnam?

SW-User
Stupid Americans sticking their nose where it didn't belong meddling in a civil war trying to use it in the grander "cold war" against communism
Fernie · F
@SW-User That's it!
BlueVeins · 22-25
France wanted a colony and the Communists wanted a puppet. The Americans wanted a free state, but we all know that wasn't happening, and the Vietnamese were too disempowered to seriously give a shit.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
Pretty much all part of the dick measuring contest known as the Cold War between the USSR and USA
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Fungirlmmm I'm not sure wearing a strap on over your head qualifies you to be a unicorn, lol
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F

@SheikYerbouti He did. Unfortunately he was killed before he could do anything to remedy his own wrongdoings.
SheikYerbouti · 51-55, M
@BlueMetalChick Exactly. Guys like McNamara knew it was pointless, yet he recommended it continue.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SheikYerbouti McNamara. Fun story, I had no idea who that guy was until I played the first Black Ops video game, and I thought his haircut was funny. Then I heard he was a real person and I went deeeeeep into reading about Kennedy years, and subsequently Nixon's administration.

Because we dumb
luctoretemergo · 61-69, M
Whatever the reason....if anyone anywhere knows a vet from that conflict, thank him....it's been well documented that their homecoming was rough and they still suffer to this day. See "The Wall" in DC!
Fernie · F
@luctoretemergo Why were they treated that way when they returned?
luctoretemergo · 61-69, M
im sure someone more authoritative can chime in but it was misplaced anger. This sounds mean but rich hippy kids who later became capitalists thought it was cool to call them baby killers or spit on them rather than effect change from within. There’s obviously more to it but it’s still the same today...I’ll walk out of class to protest climate change or gun control rather than be involved ....
I’m going to scream until I get my way!!!!
Ok, I’m done.
Fernie · F
@luctoretemergo" In 1968 US soldiers murdered several hundred Vietnamese civilians in the single most infamous incident of the Vietnam War. The My Lai massacre is often held to have been an aberration but investigative journalist Nick Turse has uncovered evidence that war crimes were committed by the US military on a far bigger scale."
Americans committed many, many atrocities against those people. To motivate troops to aim for a high body count, competitions were held between units to see who could kill the most. Rewards for the highest tally, displayed on "kill boards" included days off or an extra case of beer. Their commanders meanwhile stood to win rapid promotion.

Very quickly the phrase - "If it's dead and Vietnamese, it's VC" - became a defining dictum of the war and civilian corpses were regularly tallied as slain enemies or Viet Cong.
Don't get me started on how many women were raped by "civilzed American soldiers"
You were in diapers when this was happening and clearly will be on the side of ANYONE who has served. They are not saints because they serve...they are still human beings...and in the military for their own reasons...it's not always patriotism and bravery.

Greed, power and money
the reds were under the bed..

fast forward to 2019.. millennials endorse the reds... lolz..
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Yeah, sure. There's roughly twelve people in the entire Western world who are communists, but an entire generation "endorses the reds." What rock do you live under.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
Because bullshit. No reason worth all the suffering that happened.

Communism and shiz...
i think it was because they couldn't get all the stuff over here so we had it at their house.

Politics, and probs money.
Bagalamaga · 56-60, M
It’s always the same reason..money
DDonde · 31-35, M
It's worth noting that South Vietnam was not very free. Diem has often been labeled as a dictator. It was less that the US wanted a free state and more that they were trying to prevent the Communist bloc from expanding via the domino theory.
Early on there was talk about whether or not support for South Vietnam was really worth it, but Johnson ultimately decided to double-down instead.
If you're young enough you need to ask, you're better off
MethDozer · M
Oh, there never was a Vietnam War. There was only a "conflict" with US aiding by sending military for "policing action" and support.

Got it?
SW-User
@MethDozer Vietnam? What’s that?
