Did the US nuke Japan as a warning to the Soviets?

TexChik · F
In a way . They did not want Russia involved in that theatre ... and Japan was negotiating with Russia . But the invasion of Japan was estimated to cost 1 million American lives ... which also swayed Trueman’s decision to drop the bombs

@TexChik Yes, he did.

@TexChik Don’t be stubborn now. You’ve already been proved wrong.

The real reason was they were deeply concerned about the potentially huge losses of their troops in the event of an assault on the Japanese home islands

No, it was a means to end the war without an invasion of main land Japan, which would have led to an extreme amount of causalities

Well you can infer that, but it was to ram it home for the Japanese, surrender or we will burn you to the ground.
To the whole world actually.

They didn't want the Soviets to reap the benefits of Japan so they nuked it to make the territory not worth anything.

@wildbill83 it's kinda like if you don't want someone to eat your candy you lick it. By nuking Japan the U.S. was destroying some of its natural resources making it less appealing to Soviet Russia.

@Lostpoet dude, please learn some history...

No, they dropped two bombs on Japan after Japan attacked Pearl Harbour. The attack also bought the US into WW2
TexChik · F
@justanothername after 4 years of war and secret development of the weapon
Spokeskitties75 · 46-50, M
No... it was really fertilizers for Japan...
@Spokeskitties75 Hiroshima and Nagasaki sure look a hell of a lot better than Detroit and Chicago!
xixgun · M
No. They nuked Japan as a way to say, “You better knock that shit off”
It was revenge for the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The B29 was the first real warning to the Soviet Union, it was the first true strategic bomber; and it wasn't until they captured a crashed/ditched one and reverse engineered it to produce the TU-4 that they had anything remotely capable of long range bombardment

No. More than anything, it was a scientific experiment.
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
@NubbinsSawyer Trinity was the experiment, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were applications....
