Well, other than the obvious, they most likely are technologically advanced beings that have figured out how to fold space or use worm holes or something. I'm pretty sure we are being 'observed'. They don't want to be seen, so we don't see them very often. They are either extraterrestrial or extra dimensional or both, and they are not all benevolent. We might get a good dose of poetic justice in the future.

By definition we don't know. It literally means "Unidentified flying object." They could be anything from experimental aircraft to an undiscovered flying species to meteors to simple swamp gas to hoaxes. I don't think anything reported here on Earth as a UFO is likely to be an actual alien space craft. If they are here -- if -- they are so well hidden that we will not see them.
