Why are the folks here so darn homophobic?

Fear, religion, indoctrination and implied and assumed beliefs.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Why are gays and lesbians so demanding that everyone accept their lifestyle?
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@basilfawlty89 Not too swift are you. 😂😂😂
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@hippyjoe1955 Are you high Joe?
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@hippyjoe1955 no, dude, you literally fucked up your own insult. You had the quotation marks and changed it from I to you, now it just looks like you agree with the idea that you don't think.

Do you know how quotation marks work?
Pfuzylogic · M
“Homophobe” is a slur for heterosexuals.
Just like “fag” is for gays.
Pfuzylogic · M
@bijouxbroussard
I am going to sleep.

I just hate seeing the term bigot used against people from the church that are not comfortable with the lifestyle.
@Pfuzylogic Not being comfortable is different from being nauseated and really different from trying to get laws passed that will actively discriminate against people who don’t live the way they do. People who disown their children, etc. It’s by degrees. And those church people I mentioned didn’t say “dumb” things, they said cruel and vicious things. And I thought if they were right, they were part of a faith I could never accept. That was when I began to withdraw.
Goodnight to you.
Pfuzylogic · M
@bijouxbroussard
Good night and I will repeat that seeing two men kiss does nauseate me.
It is automatic just like an instinct.
SW-User
And its always the ones who claim to be so kind and holy. Love does not judge.
Careful, or you will be called a heterophobe by some of them. 😕
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@Kwek00 I'm which it would be bigotry or prejudice, bit wouldn't fit the concept of racism which by its sociological definition requires power. Is it right? Of course not, bit it's not on par with racism. Some black guy saying "cracker" and blaming white people for stuff isn't nearly on par with slavery and Jim Crow laws.
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@basilfawlty89 Jim Crow Laws are an actual institution.

But when I look around in my own enviorement... there is no such law.
Yet, when we go measure or do tests, people with Arab names have less chance of getting a job then people with a name that is more traditional around here. This test have been done more then once, where people send the exact same resume, but one with an Arab name and the other with a Belgian name, yet just because of the name on the paper, the Arabic candidate has less positive respondses then the one with the Belgium name.

This kind of behavior, purely based on prejudice, isn't institutionalised. Yet it's still a form of excercising power. And I would still call it prejudice on the basis of race.
@xixgun
'Tis funny. I've noticed your own remarks on definition of phobia, which you used to decline there being such thing as homophobia. I'm used to your kind of rhetoric, one of your fellows has spent time on harassing me and following me coz of my sexuality and not being religious myself. Such fine Christian, would you happen to be one too ?
[big]Homophobia[/big]

Homophobia encompasses a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).[1][2][3] It has been defined as contempt, prejudice, aversion, hatred or antipathy, may be based on irrational fear and ignorance, and is often related to religious beliefs.[4][5]

Homophobia is observable in critical and hostile behavior such as discrimination and violence on the basis of sexual orientations that are non-heterosexual.[1][2][6]

@Pfuzylogic except I have never. Tell me where I ever said I was gay. I'm straight, see my profile.
Pfuzylogic · M
@basilfawlty89 You claimed to be gay and marginalized before.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@Pfuzylogic I have never claimed to be gay at all, the only thing I ever claimed to be marginalized over is due to being mixed and having mental illness. I've never claimed to be gay. Perhaps you're mistaking me with another user.
FaeLuna · 31-35, F
I was going to say I haven't really seen any homophobia here, but then I read the comments...

Hoo boy, this is much worse than I thought.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@FaeLuna like YouTube, the best advice is to never read the comments.
FaeLuna · 31-35, F
@basilfawlty89 Best advice for most of the internet, really!
Because they’re bigots.
Pfuzylogic · M
@bijouxbroussard
People that assign labels with beliefs different than theirs are at least as closed minded.
@Wildflowerr That’s not a God I could ever worship. That is the definition of evil, right there. And only a truly cruel person would say that God would allow gay teens to suicide as a way of removing evil.
Please don’t speak to me again.
MissLlyn · 26-30, F
@Wildflowerr brainwashed much?
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
SW allows a wide variety of disparate opinions here, it's part of its charm, in my opinion.

You are free to mute/block those whose opinion you find offensive or anachronistic.
Indy74 · 46-50, F
@SumKindaMunster very well said!!👍️☺
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Indy74 Thanks! 🤗
Indy74 · 46-50, F
@SumKindaMunster my pleasure!!🤗
Reverend · M
Nobody here is afraid of homos, that im aware of.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Reverend You know full well that homophobia is not just fear of homosexuals. It's bigotry.
Reverend · M
@Quizzical bigotry works both ways. I don't have to be accepting of their lifestyle to accept them as a person.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Reverend Well, that's a fair point.

Although bi myself I do find that the whole 'pride' thing is a bit OTT and rammed down folks throats.
SW-User
🤷‍♂️ Some people are brought up that way I suppose or influenced by others with that opinion.
SW-User
I haven't noticed too much so far, thankfully. I've mentioned having a boyfriend more than once and no one has said anything negative about it. Maybe there are some homophobic people here, but I'm sure they're outnumbered. Most people here seem pretty decent about it.
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
Religion says it’s a sin. They blame it on that because that’s what they are taught to believe.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@Wildflowerr clearly your God in your beliefs creates gay people then punishes them for having desires for the same gender. And he punishes them with eternal damnation. Your whole post above talking of destruction is full of hate. You actively don't want LGBT to have the same rights as straight people do and your excuse for that is your beliefs.

@Wildflowerr I just gave it for you based on your own words and basic logical reasoning.
Ignorance brings fear and fear brings hate.

@Wildflowerr 🤔 I'm sure you wrote this and went "aha! Got him with my genius!" Gave a smug smile and went about your way. I laughed reading this, hard. Your ignorance is astounding, absolutely astounding. What gives someone as mentally handicapped as you the confidence to scream nonsense in a public forum such as this? And with such confidence!
SW-User
@RandomForest I read her first comment and my first thought was what you wrote, her "ignorance is astounding." It's beyond anything I've ever read on this site. I can't imagine being so willfully ignorant of the world as she is. It's scary tbh.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
I doubt whether the proportion of unreconstructed homophobes on SW differs much from anywhere else, but the people with the worst and most bitterly-held prejudices tend to be the ones who make themselves that much more noticeable.

Though only they know why they parade themselves on a discussion forum knowing they will find supporters but will also be challenged - something deeply-prejudiced people usually fear - and challenged in ways ranging from reasoned questioning to merely childish swearing.
xixgun · M
As someone else pointed out, "homophobic" is an incorrect term as "phobic" means "fear". No one fears homosexuals (of any gender).

There are a variety of reasons that people don't accept it or follow the apparent dictates that they embrace them with open arms.
Many of those reasons have nothing whatsoever to do with religion.
SW-User
@xixgun You might not fear it, but I've spoken with people who do. They're fearful of being "turned" gay. They believe it's a choice and there's an indoctrination process.
@xixgun
Homophobia is a fear of or hostility towards gay people or homosexuality.

Source : https://www.peelregion.ca/health/sexuality/relations/sex-harass.htm
Let me quote : "... fear of or hostility towards gay people or homosexuality." Hostility will be enough to call it homophobia. You're welcome !
I think there every place, if it's not one thing it would be something else, they voice there disapproval but fail to see there own faults. They might think there better then the ones they are talking about but it's a delusion, no one is better than I am, and I'm no better then anyone else. Those that say that the Bible says it's a sin, they need to get there hearts right with God, there are all types of sins, gossip, judgment, ect.. No one is perfect, but there must be a cloud that covers there perception of seeing things for what they are. I don't expect it to change any time soon in the future, they influence how there children see things and they end up much like there parents, therefore it continues. Any how that's my opinion on that matter.
SW-User
I don't see it often to be honest.

Many people are control freaks and feel the need to influence or control others into thier own way of thinking.

I feel it's not my business.

Things only are if someone demands that they have a duty to make it my business.

Otherwise, I am not worried over it.
SW-User
Ignorance and fear.
A bit of a generalization perhaps but I may be influenced by the fact that some of my friends on here are gay.Sadly you will find homophobic people in all walks of life..
SW-User
Because they're stupid old farts
@SW-User Not all old folks are against equality.
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard I didn’t say all old folks were
@SW-User Not all of the homophobes are old at all.

Ignorant rubes are over represented on SW.
Between SW and EP (which is around a decade) I have never been the target of homophobic remarks. May it's something you yourself are doing.
Alifeinterrupted · 26-30, F
@Grateful4you I meant where I live
SW-User
Some people still believe they are contagious. If they accept you they will be looking at swatches, and swishing , and popping out of closets everywhere.
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
🤷‍♂️ why are so many people so Hoplophobic? especially non-Americans... 🤔
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@wildbill83 Well I'm not by default. I do not fear anyone whom I have no reason to fear.

Sorry though... "Hoplo..."? A new word to me, but I am not American and do not live in America.
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
@ArishMell you say you're not and you don't even know what it means... 🙄
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@wildbill83 I know that seems illogical, but please read the second clause, which I will amplify by saying I do not judge people I do not know.
cause they don't understand and religious people tel em 2 b

I don't know but it's very sad it makes me very unhappy

Because prejudice Carrie's on.
