How do you deal with homophobia?

The reason I ask is from a personal experience I had recently on line. Some guy sent me a message saying he would like to kill me because he thought I was gay and praised to Orlando criminal. This is positively shocking and I was quite intimated by it, even though I know there is no way he could find me as what he contacted me on is a strictly private and anonymous site, I used a fake name.

This was exactly my reference.

@SapphicHeart Yes...no matter the nature.
@Ellen
Exactly !

Being straight, I have people that threaten me all the time. When I was in high school, even though I was straight, I had to deal with homophobia.

I want to know just one thing - why is it when someone wants to hurt you or worse, and you're gay, is there some special term for it; but straight people face the same threats of violence - no one cares?

WHY someone wants to hurt you is irrelevant and ALL crime is a hate crime.
@xixgun
Maybe, I'm only saying maybe it might be connected to something else than neglecting hate crimes towards heterosexuals...

But then again, it won't fit into your narrative... I got you something...

@SapphicHeart Well, you can drop the "narrative" horse shit, because I don't have one. I'm telling you what I personally have had to deal with.

And, never having been a small, unathletic, smart, teenage boy; you have no idea that you get label a homosexual (and bullied accordingly) by just about everyone. In case you wondered why "nerds" are always so sex obsessed, it's because they desperately want everyone to know that they are most definitely straight.

My point, was that if we're all human and should all be respected equally, then let's actually follow that and not be selective about the groups which are to be respected.

And if you found anything in my comment to be homophobic, then that's on you, and only - on you.
@xixgun
Oh my. If you had given attention towards my very first comment for your reply here, you'd see that my approach to hate crime is that all hate crime is equally bad.

I'm sorry for your personal, and traumatizing experiences being harassed because of your physical appearance. I won't try to marginalize it, just as much as I won't for the OP. However, it's exactly what you're doing to the OP with your initial reply for him. You're trying to edit / tell him how he can talk about his experience by telling him it's not okay to mention he's homosexual and that's part of why he first place has met this hate crime he's talking about. Does it take away anything of your own experience that he does this ? I doubt it does.

As for your reply to me, no you didn't tell me about your own experiences. You did in your original reply for the OP justify your approach telling him off by you yourself having to deal with homophobia, even though you were straight. However, you did say ... because the victim is a homosexual, the crime is given a special status; when if the victim was straight - you'd never hear about it at all. Hence my reference to the statistics of hate crimes based on sexuality. There will be reasons why hate crime towards homosexuals are more mentioned than towards heterosexuals merely based on the huge differences in occurrences. That said, your typical right wing media outlets will make sure to emphasize when heterosexuals are victims of hate crime, and in higher rates [compared to occurrences] than the homosexuals.

Isn't it sad that you focus more on telling the victim [well-knowing what being a victim does to you] to not tell his story in the ways he does to deal with it to meet his needs, rather than focusing your "anger" towards the ones who victimized him, as yourself ? Personally I find it sad and a sign of the time we live in, where we blame the victims rather than the ones conducting the crimes.

With this, peace out to you and may you be able to get over your trauma from back in your youth at a time. I hope you with time will be able to place your harm towards the predators rather than the homosexuals when dealing with this.
It's sad. The most aggressive homophobic tends to be suffering from internalized homophobia which makes them both an attacker as a victim on the same time. I hope they sooner than later will accomplish to get in sync with their own sexuality. I deal in various ways with homophobia. However, as goes for death threats online on an anonymous site, I can only relate to this site where I had two death threats this far. I've reported the incidents to admins and both users have been banned by now, it took a little longer with one of them but he continued his aggressive behavior towards women and was banned too eventually.

Jesus Christ I'm so sorry. That's horrifying.

You're right that he's not actually coming for you, but it is a pretty deep reminder that there are people out there who will do violence upon you simply for existing.

@YukikoAmagi That is good, please stay safe, and private, that would make you some sort of enigma. I come from a mining area where homosexuality was not in everyone's face when growing up in the 1980's, then Aids came along then all the really bigoted comments would surface and the gay community had the blame for this disease regardless of it coming from druggies as well as unprotected promiscuous sex and monkeys in Africa.

@AndrewC1993 You may be free and liberated by being out, and it is honest, but is it completely safe ? It is still wise to be a very private person and not be too open about it as even in the 21st century there are still homophobic people out there who just don't understand. I mean, how would you cope with homophobic slurs and comments and jokes, not being able to hold hands in public in case it provokes a homophobic attack. ?
AndrewC1993 · 31-35, M
@Andy69 I mean I'm open, even how I express myself but I value privacy too. And I live in Ireland so its quite laid back at times.
Entertaining the notion of killing someone on the basis that they are gay - or that they may be - is completely deranged.

Why can't everybody just live and let live?

Stand up for yourself always.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
It's mean to do but they could have been trolling, if not I would have just told him that killing someone who hasn't hurt anyone would be a cowardly thing to do.

Then I'd block and leave it at that.

Sick fuck!
