Apparently this happened over in the UK.

Do you think the school made the right decision?

Should children as young as 10 be learning about LGBT?

What are your thoughts?

> Do you think the school made the right decision?

No because it certainly wound up in discussions like this which has likely humiliated the school and bombarded it with negative press and probably death threats to the principle. Suspension is ludicrously over the top.

> Should children as young as 10 be learning about LGBT?

Yeah of course. Should kids with gay parents be isolated somehow? If a kid can learn about heterosexuality they can learn about homosexuality.

> What are your thoughts?

Schools over-correct in idiotic ways a lot of the time and just feed the "PC thought police" alarmist bullcrap people keep making up. Which is infuriating and makes getting stuff done harder.

I think suspending a kid is extreme, just tell them it's mandatory like any other part of the curriculum. There's nothing wrong with kids learning about people that aren't cis or straight, it can be done in a tasteful/PG way and it'll help them not feel so alone or different later if they find themselves questioning their identity (or help them be more understanding and respectful of others later on).
Quizzical · 46-50, M
Jesus, I wish I could have been excused from Religious Education and French 🙄

I have mixed feelings about this sort of thing.

Some knowledge of LGBT is important and its part of today's society, but I don't think there should be entire courses dedicated to the subject.

And he should not have been suspended for ASKING to be excused... Had he played hooky though then THAT would have been a different matter.
Wol62 · 51-55, M
@Quizzical How do you run a school though when pupils can pick and choose which lessons they want to attend?
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@SW-User We didn't have ethics lessons. I can imagine I would have hated them though.

Now, PE I really enjoyed!
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Wol62 That's the thing... You can't.

We all have to do things that we don't want to... But no-one should be punished for merely ASKING not to do something, lol
abe182 · 46-50, M
I think it's indoctrination at that age and why is it being taught in schools??
SW-User
It's statutory in the curriculum to teach it. However, parents can request their child is removed from the lesson.
When we teach it, we have a script to follow and are allowed to answer questions. However mostly the kids just ask why people think it's wrong.
I bet there are plenty of people that don’t understand it because they’re straight. @SW-User

@Spoiledbrat as a straight teacher that works with kids in a faith school, yes.

I think it's okay for young children to be taught about the existence of LGBT people, just as it's okay for Christians to learn about Muslims or vice versa. There shouldn't be anything sexual about what they're learning until sex ed. I will say that I was 10 when I first had sex ed (5th grade), which is a normal age to start learning about that kind of thing in many areas. Either way, if the kid can be excused, he should be allowed to and should not be suspended for that. That was very clearly the wrong decision in my opinion.
I think the school should get permission from parents to discuss sexuality before just discussing it.
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Spoiledbrat I agree 1,000%
That should be the parents decision and not the schools. Also if the child has not interest in such things they should not be punished for not wanting to participate. Some of the LGBT community forget that some of us has no interest in that type of lifestyle. Don't force it on us if we don't want any part of it. Especially for someone like me that don't condemn others for participating. Just don't expect me to join in. lol
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@GoldButterfly You know. I had no interest in learning about the president's of the united states and taking a constitutional
Final test in order to pass 8th grade...so.i guess they should have just let me walk out of class!

Honest to Pete.

This was not a sex ed class. More than likely it was a history and or sociology type class. Where by they learn about different cultures and people. You know...education.
lol, answer in a respectful way and yet idiots take offense. lol I have a right to not participate in whatever I choose to not participate in.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
Why shouldn't they? Should they be sheltered from the realities of the world.

Should hate be tolerated inside a school where education is the goal?

Maybe if we had been educated better on these topics we would not be here debating this right now.
curiosi · 61-69, F
They wish to take away the parents right to parent their children. It's what happens when so many want to depend upon the government. It's going to get worse from here.
Divide and conquer. Divided we fall @curiosi
GoldenWorm · 51-55, M
Snowflake, LGBTQ people exist.
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Spoiledbrat Yes, exactly. Even though I am bi Trans, I hate today's militants within the community, they are way overboard and target those in business that want nothing to do with them, like the cake bakers.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@NativeOregonian They just don't understand, you can't FORCE someone to like and accept you, and if you try then folks tend to become resentful more than anything 😒
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Quizzical They understand, they just don't care, and are hellbent on punishing everyone with lawsuits that they can, just because they want to.
SW-User
On the fence. I mean I feel like children should have the chance to solely see lgbt people from an unbiased point of view and base their opinions on it themselves. My main issue with it being taught in school is that it may very well be taught by people with an extreme bias.
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@SW-User I've found that the best way of being exposed to the positive side of LGBT is just to know someone who is bi or gay...

Once someone sees that YOU are pretty much okay and largely the same as them then acceptance for all soon follows.
SW-User
@DukeOfEarle True and i'm not sure they should even have an opinion on it. It just is. Just like gay people seeing straight people on tv all their lives. No opinion. It just is. lol
SW-User
@Quizzical Good point
NativeOregonian · 51-55
I identify bi Trans, but being forced and punished into something you don't agree with as a child is pure bullying, these militant assholes must be stopped doing their shit. If they refuse to make a cake, go somewhere else that would be grateful for their business.
🥳 So agreed! You rule. You have my vote. @NativeOregonian
Eternity · 26-30, M
This isnt a yes or no format compatible question; too many variables. Tbh anything that doesnt have to do with reading, math, or history, should be fuckin optional. Including religion.

If he gets to walk out of gay class then i get to walk out of bible class. Fair is fair.
Effloresce · 26-30, F
I don’t see a problem with teaching it to young children, but I don’t think the student should have been suspended for that
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Effloresce Jeanette says that her neice is all kinds of messed up and rebellious now to the point where her dad is ready to put her into a group home run by the Lutheran church to straighten her out.
Effloresce · 26-30, F
What kind of school does she attend? Is it a regular public school?@NativeOregonian
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Effloresce Yes, public school in Des Moines, iowa. The politics in iowa are very conservative, but the teachers are so neoliberal that they make the ones in California and New York seem trumpish by comparison.
Pherick · 41-45, M
Well since this is only being reported by far-right sites and the school denies that this is how things went down, I have a feeling that the 10-year-olds aren't telling the truth here.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@Pherick We all know Breitbart is a fantastic source for real news
ShaythePanTransMan · 22-25, T
Yes, but might want to teach them tolerance of LGBTQ+ people and topics because they shouldn’t be exposed to sex ed until like going into middle school (so like 11 to 12), which is when my school did sex ed presentations and stuff. About sex ed, it would be good not to be so heteronormative because some of that info is gonna be useless or confusing to gay kids. Just reminds me when we went to the True Colors conference (would never go again it was boring), and they actually held sex ed classes but with a homonormative focus it was kind of funny.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
shit way to ask a question !

Devil's in the details !
MasterofNone · 26-30, M
There should be no schools. :D
NO. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT. THE KID LEFT, SO WHAT. IF HE DID THAT DURING A BORING HISTORY LESSON NO ONE WOULD CARE. 🙂🤗
Graylight · 51-55, F
I agree that the child should simply have been told it was a mandatory requirement rather than be suspended, but science and anthropology isn't left to 10-year-olds for a reason. Her views can be based on nothing other than her parents' at this point, and belief that something's icky doesn't make it voluntary in school.
Tracyboy · 36-40, T
Yeh just like you were not there either if this had happend the UK press would have been hounding the School The Local Council and the Government allso the UK POLICE would have been involved
tallpowerhouseblonde · 31-35, F
It is a big issue here now and even the politicians don't know the best thing to do.Parents have been protesting at school gates saying LGBT should not be taught so young.
Tracyboy · 36-40, T
Fake news this did not happen in the UK
I know. Neither is CNN. @JaggedLittlePill
Tracyboy · 36-40, T
@DukeOfEarle Reported by a local rag that is part of the Daily Mail Group, total sensational jinglist crap
Uh huh. So you were there and can verify this never happened? 👍@Tracyboy
MistressOfEvil · 26-30, F
Why shouldn’t they? Eventually they are going to be exposed to it in society.

Although suspension seems a bit extreme.
Jentlemen · 46-50, M
Sure.Lets keep kids confused and make them questions their sexuality as soon as possible.
Children should be taught in matters concerning true love not in matters concerning a chosen bed-partner.
Tracyboy · 36-40, T
typical fake american crap
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Tracyboy This was in the UK
Tracyboy · 36-40, T
I live in the UK Did NOT happen here
Quizzical · 46-50, M
@Tracyboy I suppose this didn't happen either then?

The Croydon Advertiser... Well known for printing fake American crap 🙄
SW-User
They should be learning about equality
SW-User
Should learn about it forever
midnightsun · 26-30, M
That's fucked up
DDonde · 31-35, M
Just say that homosexuality/bisexuality/etc also exists during the regular sex ed stuff. The "T", is a completely separate issue, I don't know where that would fit in. The question of why it all happens is far from settled - just mention that not everyone is straight and that's okay. 🤷‍♂️
[sep]
My only other thoughts was that I'm skeptical that that site is a credible source of news, but after looking it up it does seem that that school in particular is having problems with pride events and angry parents in other sources of news, so it seems plausible.
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@DDonde it fits into culture and soxiologiy. Transgender rights fits into history. And discrimination .

I am so sick of people's willful ignorance.

The question of why it happens fits into SCIENCE.
DDonde · 31-35, M
@JaggedLittlePill I don't disagree.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Extreme. And that sort of thing is up to parents. It should be addressed by them and it would be negligent of them not to
strongbow · 46-50, M
Just as bad as this crap
