Calling ships she, is a very old tradition. And I'm not sure where it came from. I do know that men tend to call things they are fond of as she as in my gun she's really good.
But sometimes these things mystify me! For instance, why do so many men have a name for their penis? I totally don't get that why would you name a part of your body? This is Bill my feet never happens

Do most people think of ships as she because society is mainly driven by straight men? So they call something beautiful a she because that's what they're comfortable with.

It originated from the Norwegian word for ship which is "sheipe" so That's why it is used for boats etc
