I am homophobic

We were at a barbecue recently & my gf was sitting behind me chatting to a group of people we didn't know. In the midst of the conversation this guy blurts out "Yeah I'm homophobic" rather loudly what's more. There was silence & everbody turned & looked at him. I turned to him & said "So you wouldn't watch the Simpsons then"? his face turned from stupid to blank. The place erupted into hysterical laughter. So with that l leaned down & gave my gf a passionate kiss & asked if she would like another drink, everbody started clapping, he got the shits & left a short time later.

I've never understood the term "homophobic." I understand that some people look at gays and lesbians and don't like them cuz of what they do. I mean it's none of their business but I get that they don't agree.

But phobic means afraid, and I don't get how anyone is afraid of gays and lesbians. I'm pretty harmless. Nothing to be afraid of with me.

@Nat15 I was confused for a long time too for the same etymological reason. I don't remember what I read one day, but it explained it for me. Here's the OED definition of "homophobia":

[quote]an extreme and irrational aversion to homosexuality and homosexuals.[/quote]

So it's not just "fear".
