Do you stare or double-take when you see two girls (or guys) holding hands?

I've been hanging out a lot over the last two weeks with someone I've know for a few years in school. Today we went on what was, I guess, our first real date. It was a day hike up to the top of a place called Blue Hills outside of Boston. Because it was a beautiful day, the trail was pretty busy and so many people stared at us, or did the classic double take. The only thing I can thing of to explain this was that we were two girls holding hands. How do you react to seeing two girls (or guys) holding hands in public?

I try not to react, because holding hands is the most ordinary thing in the world. But actually I well up inside with happiness that two girls or two boys have the confidence not to be intimidated by what other people think 😌

@TammieBear Thank you Tammy!!!

I never stare at 2 girls or 2 guys holding hands - why should I?.. it's perfectly natural!.."Different strokes for different folks"
@Drummer Agreed! And thank you!

[c=#4C0073]Perfectly normal in my books, i would smile to myself thinking of the love they share <3[/c]
@SW-User Can i hold your hand? 🤗

@IAmJess [c=#4C0073]anytime, on any day 😁 🤗[/c]

I think its cute
@Fangirl I just wish it was normal and not even worth noticing. Like no different than a straight couple holding hands.
Fangirl · 18-21, F
@IAmJess Sorry. If it makes ya feel any better I do that to straight couples too lol
Hasmita · M
@IAmJess Straight couples showing public affection have received disparaging remarks in my lifetime by some.
It's affection. It's love. We need more of it.

@dunpender You said ...
[c=#003BB2]they can cornhole each other as much ad they like but should never expect real people to find that acceptable[/c]
But about straight people doing the EXACT SAME THING you said ...
[c=#003BB2]I find sodomy repulsive but what they do in their bedrooms I do not see[/c]
The "problem" is clearly all in your head. Stop imagining what is going on in someone else's bedroom and take care of your own life.

I don't know, maybe my work or life is too stressful lately, but I think I'd just be happy that there are at least two people near me who feel affection for each other.
@Eyesropen Thank you for that. I'm sorry your life is so stressful right now. I hope things get better.
Eyesropen · 61-69, C
Oh. Yeah, ain't no big thang...
manly · 46-50, M
Hmmm...I haven't yet read all the comments, yet could it be because of your youth? Boston is a progressive city, but are there alot of younger women holding hands in the streets there and in the suburbs? I dunno.
@manly Well, we are definitely in the suburbs and not right in Boston. And, honestly, I don't know if there were other girls out holding hands because I wasn't trying to notice anybody but who I was with. BUT, I kept noticing people doing the double take and when they did their eyes were focused on our hands. And in case it was just me and I was just being paranoid (completely possible), I asked her about it when we sat for lunch and she had noticed the same thing.

@MissMaybe thanks
xRedx · M
I don't stare or double-take. I wasn't brought up that way. If that's what they want who is anyone to say otherwise
@xRedx Thank you!
mathsman · 70-79, M
It's so sexy
mathsman · 70-79, M
@IAmJess With you totally on that.
@mathsman Then why did you say, "It's so sexy"? That's the opposite reaction. Actually, reactions like that are the problem.
mathsman · 70-79, M
@IAmJess Because a couple holding hands is so sexy
Mermaid · 22-25, F
I would probably double take. But me and one of my best friends hold hands and it's just a friend thing.
@Mermaid And I've held hands with friends before. Interesting you say that because when people'd stare at us then I didn't care. If it was someone I knew, I'd stick my tongue out or something equally as silly. But I think I felt different, more self conscious, today because it was a date.
Mermaid · 22-25, F
[sep]@IAmJess yeah I understand! I guess you feel self conscious because some people don't like that kind of thing/it draws attention because lesbian relationships are rare, well a lot less common than straight ones.
Me & my friend got told "omg you two are so cute." When we holding hands in public, we weren't even on a date.
@EllieTheKittyKat I just wish it could be a non-thing.

Holding hands? I didn't know it was wrong to hold a girl's hand 🤔
@SW-User I don't know that anyone thought it was wrong, but I was just surprised by the number of people today who did a double take at us. And I don't know that it was because we were holding hands. I just don't like being the one being looked at like that.
SW-User
@IAmJess lol..weird people

@dunpender Why? To each his own, right?
No. No big deal.
@Elandra77 Thanks. I just wish it could be nothing to make note of. Like nothing to see here, go on with your lives kinda thing.
@IAmJess It is far better now than it once was. Anymore it should not even be an issue.
@Elandra77 Thanks

It's just holding hands, nothing special about it.
PeanutsauntieP1982 · 41-45, F
I think, "aww, how sweet!!"
@PeanutsauntieP1982 Do you think the same way when you see a straight couple holding hands?
PeanutsauntieP1982 · 41-45, F
Yes. I am happy to see two people in love. I LOVE seeing couples hold hands. I guess that's my inner romantic...
insextra · F
I think its cool .
@insextra I think it should be nothing. Neither cool nor not cool. Just two people holding hands.
insextra · F
@IAmJess i think i just insinuated that .
@insextra Thanks!
SwarmSona · F
jealousy and happiness
@SwarmSona Hmmm ... maybe some I guess.
@sighmeupforthat Thank you for that...
Mrsbetweenfatandfit · 26-30, F
Nope, was never raised to think much of something plain like that.
@Mrsbetweenfatandfit Well yes, I know you're right about that. But I'm not assuming that everyone who looked or did a double take was thinking we were wrong for holding hands. Some, like commenters here, might have been like "Oh look! Two girls holding hands! How cute!" Ugh, shoot me.
Mrsbetweenfatandfit · 26-30, F
@IAmJess That is still a thought of weird/strange. If it was normal they would not even glance for that fact
@Mrsbetweenfatandfit [c=#BF0080]Exactly my point!!!!![/c]

@IAmJess true thank u
@Princessjen11 Good decision deleting that. Always be safe on places like this. They can be fun, but they are also very dangerous.

Anyway, nice to meet you! We actually don't live very far apart considering that most of my SW friends aren't even in my time zone!
