I'd Rather Get To Know You Than Small Talk
Finding out about each other is more wise I believe than to just talk about nothing much in the hope of a revelation of some kind.

Most people start with small talk until they have some degree of trust. They put up untold number of barriers to protect their inner self and they won't just lower those barriers until they feel safe to do so. Some are more free on social media sites because they feel insulated from harm. The screen that separates you is just enough of a safety net to allow them to go farther.
