I Saw A Good Movie Tonight

>The name of the movie was Inside Out. On the surface, it seemed like a children's movie, because it was animated, and the main character of the story was an 11-year-old girl. But it was so much more interesting and thought-provoking than any children's movie I've ever seen. It had a lot to say about the inner workings of people, and it made me think about which emotion, or emotions, are running the show in my life. Every emotion has a purpose, but we need to be aware of which emotion is mainly in control.

I also liked it because it takes place in Minnesota, my home state.

We saw it on the big screen in an empty theater for only two bucks each! I go to the movies every couple of months, and I can't remember the last time there were more than five people in the place. How they stay in business is a mystery. The depth and insight of Inside Out is touching. It's too bad that most people will dismiss it as mere kids' pap..., as I almost did myself. I never would've been there if not as a favor to my 7-year old..., and yet, it ended up being one of the best movies I've ever seen. (Of course, I should've had some clue after the Toy Story trilogy, but there is a lot of actual pap out there too.) This is just one example of the many awesomely ironic rewards of parenting in general... :)

I'm glad that you go to see it too, and that you also liked it. Yeah, I wonder how many adults will ever see this, because a lot of them probably though that was just another kids' movie.

I'm not sure how those theaters (especially second-run theaters) stay in business either. Quite often the theater that I like to go to (the Riverview in Minneapolis) is close to empty, though the last few nights it has been so full that my boyfriend and I didn't even want to go in there. I think they make most of their money from the popcorn and other refreshments that they sell there. At the Riverview, popcorn actually costs more than tickets! That's why they don't like it if you bring your own snacks in there. We're probably helping the Riverview stay in business not only by buying tickets, but also by buying popcorn and H2Oh! there.

Actually, the movie begins in Minnesota, but most of it takes place in San Francisco, California. But Minnesota was this girl's home state, as it is mine. :)

LOL! I've been wanting to see that. I was told it was pretty good.

It was. I was surprised by how much I got out of it, considering that it appeared to be a children's movie.

Hmmm, gotta see this one.

Yeah, I liked it. Where I live, it was showing in the second-run discount theaters, so you may be able to see it for cheap (if there are any discount theaters in your area).

Or I could just buy it on DVD. I've never heard of 'Inside Out' before but then again, I don't get out to the movies much either. To me, usually Disney/ Pixar movies are pretty good.

Yeah, if it isn't available on DVD yet, it should be soon.

what was it about?

It was about an 11-year-old girl named Riley, who has to move from Minnesota to San Francisco, California because her dad got a new job there, and how her emotions struggle to help her adjust to this and cope with the new environment that she finds herself in. Each of her emotions is shown as a character in the movie. From the time she was born, her most dominant emotion has always been Joy, but because this is a difficult time for her, the other emotions, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust start fighting to take control of her mental state. Joy struggles to maintain control and keep the other emotions in check, but for a while Joy and Sadness get pushed into the background. In the end, Joy realizes that Sadness also serves a real purpose (just as Fear, Anger, and Disgust do), and, with the help of Sadness, she manages to help the girl accept what has happened and begin to create new happy memories. I hope that I'm not giving away too much, in case you might want to see the movie. But it was really good.

I think that the real message of the movie is that all of our emotions, even sadness, have a purpose. Some people seem to think that sadness is always a bad thing that should never be experienced, and in the movie the other emotions didn't understand Sadness's purpose either. But in the end Sadness proved to be very necessary. If it hadn't been for Sadness, the girl would never have gotten the understanding and support that she needed from her parents to help her adjust to the move.
