Why do humans crave drugs?

It seems that people are hardwired to enjoy all sorts of drugs (alcohol, weed, video games, ...). I find that interesting since it looks like a flaw in our brain that we are trying to fix by escaping our thought, or our true personality. What do you think is the main reason we escape into the arms of brain altering mechanisms.

I've never done recreational drugs, including weed. I have this strange quirk in my personality even from childhood that unless I have a good reason to do something I don't, so I never found a reason to do drugs. I did drink to excess in my younger years until I got hold of that. Now I rarely drink.
I think genetics and influence play a role, and some have thrill seeking personalities. I believe there is a variety of factors.

@sumojumo Yes!!! I would get the "it's so wild that you don't do it dude. What's the secret?" among other stuff lol

@ravenwind43 being with stoned people is so nice, such a friendly and fun bunch :). Well, at least when you are in high school :)

@sumojumo Makes sense at 17..at 47 you might want to ask yourself when the party ends. lol
I realize medicinal pot is different. :)

We are addicted to escaping. Human beings can be incredibly competitive and egotistical.
The use of these things are used as a way to manage the struggles in life but also as a way to challenge the ego... "its not gonna happen to us" we always think we're not going to succumb to the addiction.
sumojumo · 36-40, M
@Peppa that is one of the pretty common addictions :), but I believe it can become a pain after a while
Peppa · 31-35, F
@sumojumo its definitely taken its toll. Im miserable and fat
sumojumo · 36-40, M
@Peppa both of those things can be improved, I wish you all the best, I am sure you will get tears of joy once you get yourself out of this hole.

It produces the same type of chemicals in the brain that being in love does. Love is an evolutionary mechanism that helps us strengthen relationships and reproduce.

It's not a weakness of will. We're biologically wired to become addicted to drugs. If you remember how terrible your breakup made you feel, that's more or less what's going on inside an addicts brain when they sober up.

@TinyViolins tnx for the explanation

Drugs are low requirement substitutes for the built in amino acid endorphins the brain secretes when real trials and success ore experienced. The root reasons for each person varies.

Some are figuratively avoiding their true experiences while others are trying to synthesize experiences they otherwise do not have the wherewithal to actually experience.

@SteelHands Low requirement?

la la, what drew the artist there? Often they have much more astute talent in the way you describe drugs. I can promise you this alcohol holds a promise, against yours that puts everything into a banal mechanism. Is it right, is wrong? All I know is stigma is wrong. And how you show it I'd rather be blind and intoxicated searching

@sumojumo escaping can give over that idea
sumojumo · 36-40, M
@SW-User oh, yeah, i understand, that word can be understood as judgmental, but I do not see escaping as something bad. We all want to escape, when I go to vacation I escape the everyday life - but i do not judge people going on vacation :)
SW-User
@sumojumo I'll leave vacations here as metaphorical.
