Need help with a Paver Patio

Paver Patio
So I’m building a paver patio and I want to put a step at my back door going down to the patio. The gavel base is going to be 8” thick with 1” of sand. Should I make my base thicker, lay concrete under the gravel base or is it fine?

the gravel needs to be compacted first
then the sand topping
over here we lay a plastic type lining first/then gravel then sand
then paving

Earthwalker thanks for that info. I’ve done my research and I’m gonna do all that but is that good enough to handle the weight of paver stone steps?
