So...mace? Hammer? Spear? Sword? Why?

Swords have a lot of romance and lore surrounding them, with a rich history, so they're the natural choice.

Axes have utility, and a strong association with Vikings, which are also romanticized quite a bit. Another good choice.

Spears have reach and that's a huge advantage when someone is charging at you.

All good choices, actually. Hard to pick just one.

Oh my gawd! You have opened a can of worms here! It is because we are sentient. We came down from the trees and started walking on two legs. A little while later we started thinking about 'right' and 'wrong', and a little while later we started wondering "why?" we were thinking about that kind of stuff.

We ate of the fruit of the knowledge of 'good and evil'. We ceased being instinctual creatures who mated at the water hole, and became sentient creatures with all the complications of sentience. We started thinking about "right" and "wrong" and all the complicated implications that come with those qualities.

I like the shape of hand weapons, there are thousands of them from different places and time in history, but I generally like swords more than the others, from zweihander to katanas etc.

Mace is good for girls, but a 38 would be more effective.
