You can decide to extend your trust to those who earn it over a significant period of time. You do not automatically owe anyone your trust. You can extend some trust provisionally if you like someone and then see how worthy of it they are. The idea that you have "trust issues" implies that being slow and careful about trusting someone is somehow pathological; actually, it's just a step on the road to maturity. Young people trust easily and therefore are often hurt. Older people know better.

Read this book:
The Gift of Fear
by Gavin DeBecker

Trust is something people earn from you over a significant period of time. It is not something you need to provide automatically because you like someone.

Gavin DeBecker, one of my heroes, will at least tune you in to understanding how to sort people out and avoid the bad ones. The book is a great read as well and will not bore you.

You don't, even your shadow leaves you in the darkness.
