How much would you spend on a wedding gift?

When I was a kid, the rule of thumb was $20, now it is $100. Is it me, or is this getting out of control? Or is this just a sign that I am getting old and complaining about inflation?

Holy shit I need to go to your weddings, I start at $200 for the slightest of friends. If it’s family closer to $500. No one at my wedding gave less than $150
@Flenflyys Come. (That is when I meet someone crazy enough to marry me.) I should warn you though, my peeps are strange, but you will definitely have a good time.

Nothing is better than strange.

Weddings are becoming more and more about show and entertainment (and more expensively too)...they're more about making impressions on guests who in turn will (hopefully) give better gifts and even money to the couple). Many will claim this is not true but in reality it is. The actual ceremony play only a small part in it, most of the planning goes into the reception party.
@indyjoe I agree. Who cares about impressing everyone. I would rather spend the money on the honeymoon!

Depends on your relationship with bride and groom.
@Scubaguy027 I suppose. Good thing my friends aren't fancy people.

When my Ex wife remaried I was SOOOO happy that my wedding gift was accordingly a substantial one.
That guy, her actual husband, is my hero.

@justberniegirl The wedding party was fabulous!
I celebrated like no other!🤣
@CharlieZ Well, I am glad you had a good time.
CharlieZ · 70-79, M
@justberniegirl Thank you, lady!
I had it, certainly.

That depends on your relationship to the bride and groom. If they are relatives, you can spend on the high end of what you can afford, but no one expects you to bankrupt yourself.
@4meAndyou That's good to know.
Mah presence is present 😇

That’s what the open bar is for

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout at hillary rates
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I don't know, let's hear your speech to see if it is worth my money. lol
MarineBob · 56-60, M
A gift card for dinner for two is plenty
@MarineBob Oh, that sounds reasonable.
GlitterBug · 22-25, F
If I don't go to the wedding I don't have to get them a gift, right?
Zoranna · F
There is usually a "Gift Register" these days where you can choose a gift from a varying price range. I sometimes don't adhere to their list if everything is too expensive for me.
@Zoranna Yeah, my friends aren't that fancy/organized.
Zoranna · F
@justberniegirl Well just spend what you can afford, it doesn't matter what others spend. Something small, practical and tasteful will be gratefully received I'm sure.
Phillyphan78 · 41-45, F
$100 sounds about right but I sometimes give more depending on how close I am to the couple. Weddings are expensive, or so I've heard lol.
@Phillyphan78 Yeah, they say people spend more time planning their weddings than the actual marriage.
Phillyphan78 · 41-45, F
@justberniegirl, isn't that a shame? I know things don't always work out but if people actually slowed down and got to know each other fully, that would probably change.
@Phillyphan78 I agree.
For my area if you are not attending the wedding or reception a card with 50 in it is normally given.
@jetpack That sounds reasonable.
newgirl · 56-60, F
Wow, it's up to $100 now? I've not been to a wedding in awhile I guess.
@newgirl I know.

200/250... up to 500+ for close family..
@SW-User So generous.

@justberniegirl
It's kinda normal....
Everything costs so much these days..

Fortunately I don't get many invitations.
😉
Me neither. A lot of my friends are still single.
BlueRain · F
You should cover your meal and it’s a gift anything after that.
It annoys me when people ask for money rather than items.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
I spend around $50
@DarkSideoftheMoon That sounds reasonable.
DarkSideoftheMoon · 31-35, F
@justberniegirl i pick something from their registry and i try to not go over 75 after shipping
ImRileyTheDog · 22-25, F
Depends on the person
BlueRain · F
$250 which is cheap.

@Stereoguy Good thing most of the people I know well and like are pretty laid back, lol.
